Constellations

Grade 6          Science

There are a large number of sites listed and many of them provide the same information. One of them, however, may suit your needs better than another one, so check out many of these sites for the best information on your constellation.

The American Association of Amateur Astronomers (AAAA)
This site will give some information on the stars in the constellations, but it may be too technical.

The Deep Photographic Guide to the Constellations
This site has a great graphic representation which allows you to mark the stars in a constellation.  It also has some of the required facts.

This site has links  to a few good pages, but the one most useful for this report is the one listed below:

This site has detailed information on the stars in the constellations, but it also has the myth of those constellations.

            This site has information on the stars in the
                            constellation as well as the myth.

This site is great for seeing the labeled image of the constellations as well as some information.

From the Peoria Astronomical Society, this page provides detailed information on the stars in the constellations and some information on the history
of the star.

This site is a wonderful source for the myths of the constellations.

This site contains information on the 88 officially-recognized constellations.
The Dome of the Sky
This site is great for the myth of the constellation, as well as for information on the main star(s).
Guide to the Constellations of the Night Sky
All 88 constellations are presented in a short form, providing information on the main star(s) as well as the mythology associated with it.
Hawaiian Astronomical Society : Deep Sky Atlas Constellation List
This site has it all: the myth, the location, the image, and the information on the stars in the constellation.
Table of Constellations
This site has a great deal of information also, the myth and the main stars as well as a diagram.

Another site which provides a great deal of the needed information.

This site is very helpful, especially for easy to understand myths.

This site has some good information on the main stars in the constellations.

Constellations- Seasonal Asterisms 
Students have had difficulty locating the main stars in the constellations.  These sites will help provide some of that information.
Main Stars of the Constellations -Site will not provide you with the size and color, but you can find useful data on the stars in the constellations.
The Constellations - This one provides wonderful information, but mostly on only the main star in the constellation.
The Brightest Stars - For those who have the names and only need the distance from Earth, this site is very helpful.
Astronomy Today - Again, this site has the names of the major stars in the constellations and the light year information.
Melbourne Planetarium: Constellations - This site has a wonderful feature - it actually gives the colors of stars in some of the more common constellations.

Color of Stars in the Constellations

If you have found all but the color of the star, you may be able to use the chart below to find out what color it is.  For example, Antares (in Scorpio) has a B-V color # of 1.83 and its color is Red.  These are only approximations, but it may help.  (The B-V #s are available on The Dome of the Sky website.)
