Children's Books for Uganda

Draper's sixth graders are participating in the Memory Project.  Students will write and illustrate children's books to send to shelters in Uganda.  These shelters provide a safe place for Uganda's "night commuters."  Night commuters are the children of Uganda.  Every night, children walk miles from their villages to city shelters in order to avoid the nighttime dangers of war.

Draper's sixth graders are making a difference in the world!

How the project will work:

In January and February, we will write and illustrate the books in class.  Most students will work with one or two partners; some students may choose to work alone.  Nearly all work on the books will be done in class.

In May, our books will be published in hardcover form by the StudenTales publishing company.  Students' donations will cover the cost of printing the books for children in Uganda.  Students will also be able to purchase their own hardcover copies of their books.  Student copies cost $14.95.

Before we ship the books in June, we will hold a fundraiser to cover the cost of shipping.  We will create a banner and ask Draper students and staff to sign the banner in exchange for donations.  Any extra money that we raise will be sent as additional support for Uganda's children.  More information about this fundraiser will come soon.
