Building Our Future
Capital project rejected by voters
On Monday, Dec. 13, Mohonasen voters rejected a $43.4 million capital construction plan. The vote was 1,058 against and 531 in favor.
“I want to thank everyone who took the time to come and vote today,” Superintendent Kathleen Spring said. “We knew this would be a difficult vote, given the economic climate. While we are disappointed by the outcome, we believe it was important to give voters an opportunity to consider this proposal and have a say on it.”
In terms of our long-range plan and facilities, Dr. Spring said the Board will be meeting in the coming weeks to discuss its next steps.
“This project included several safety upgrades and building improvements that would have laid the foundation for some exciting, modern academic programming,” she said. “Of course we never stop planning for the future or for a high-quality education for all Mohonasen students.”
The project, which would have been mostly funded through state building aid, was the second phase of the district’s long-range plan. The first phase – the EXCEL project approved by voters in 2007 – addressed infrastructure needs such as plumbing and heating. In this second phase, officials set their sights on programs and services for students.
Officials had estimated the tax impact to be about $40 on a $100,000 home.
