Eminent domain public hearing postponed

The Mohonasen Central School District has postponed a public hearing for eminent domain proceedings. The hearing was scheduled for Monday, Feb. 9 at 6 p.m. A new date and time for the hearing has not been set.

As part of the district’s capital project planning discussions, a piece of property on Serafini Drive has been under consideration for a potential bus garage and athletic fields. Eminent domain is a legal proceeding that allows a public entity, like a school district, to take possession of a piece of property for public benefit.

The district has been discussing for some time a capital project with the broad goals of enhancing student safety, protecting the investment taxpayers have made in the district over the years, and increasing student opportunities — at a time when Mohonasen continues to have access to a high level of state building aid.

“Our preference has always been to work with the property owners,” Superintendent Dr. Kathleen Spring said. “We see a possible opportunity to continue negotiations with the owners and felt it would be appropriate to postpone the eminent domain hearing to follow up on that opportunity.”
