Selective Classification Policy for Mohonasen Athletes
The Mohonasen Central School District
participates in the New York State Education Department approved
program that provides the opportunity for 7th and 8th grade students
to participate on varsity, junior varsity, and freshmen teams. The
purpose of selective classification is to determine the level of
physical fitness of your son or daughter when compared to older
athletes that will be competing in high school programs. This
program has been designed for the exceptional few in each school who
would be served by playing on a higher-level team than age and grade
might indicate. It is not intended to fill out rosters at the high
school level. Parents should be cautioned that even though an
athlete may be physically ready does not mean that he/she may be
socially or emotionally ready to handle the normal stress of
competition. We must make sure it is a right fit for both the
athlete and team. All information must be collected and evaluated by
the Director of Athletics before a student may try out for a team.
Included below is the process that the Mohonasen Central School
District will use when selectively classifying an athlete.
1. Prior to consideration by the Director of Athletics a 7th or 8th grader must obtain a letter of recommendation from the varsity coach in the particular sport he/she wished to be selectively classified.
2. Parent Permission must be obtained for the process to continue
3. Medical examination and approval by the school physician with the development and maturity level determined by the school physician in accordance with established guidelines for the level of a particular sport.
4. A Physical Education Teacher that is not the athlete’s coach will administer the six-item athletic performance test. The athlete must meet or exceed the criteria established for the level of participation desired. Students who do not meet the criteria during the test may have an opportunity for a second chance to reach the standards.
5. The Director of Athletics will inform the athlete, parent and coach of the selective classification status.
