Safety tips for the beginning of the school year — and all year round

Tip #1 - Walk your child to and from the bus stop or set up a rotation system with fellow parents to go to the bus stops.

Tip #2 - Talk to your kids about strangers and safety. They are never too old to talk to about safety.

Tip #3 – Walk around your neighborhood and get to know your neighbors and their children.

Tip #4 – Attend school functions and open houses and get to know your children’s teachers and guidance counselors.

Tip #5 – Keep both eyes on your children’s computer usage. Keep computers in a common area. Pay attention to MySpace and Facebook postings. Consider software to keep track of all keystrokes and usage by kids.

Tip #6 – Yield to all pedestrians in crosswalks. Stay out of the school bus drop off areas and watch for children in the parking lot areas.
