Everybody loves Math in New York State. What are some places to visit in New York State?

 

The New York State Fair

1. The New York State Fair is held in Rochester, New York every year just before Labor Day weekend. More information can be found out about the fair at www.nysfair.org. If the fair begins on Thursday, August 21, and ends on Monday, September 1, how many days long is the fair? If you buy advance tickets, how much would it cost for 5 adults to attend the fair? How much would it cost if these 5 adults did not buy their tickets ahead of time? How much did they save buying tickets ahead of time?

 

The Empire State Building

2. The Empire State Building is the tallest building in New York State. By looking up www.esbnyc.com/kids, you find out out many neat things about this tall skyscraper. Write as an ordinal number how many people have visited the Empire State Building. Which number wonder of the world is the Empire State Building? Click on the word Observatory in the paragraph. How many feet high is the 86th floor in the observatory? How many meters high? How many hours is the observatory open daily/ weekly? Use your calculator to find out how many hours yearly the Empire State Building is open?

 

Adirondack Peaks

3. Mt. Marcy is the tallest peak in New York State. It is located in the Adirondack Mountains in northern part of New York State. You can view a table listing the top 100 peaks in the Adirondack Mountains at www.adirondack-park.net/peaks/. What is the sum of the heights of the four tallest peaks in the Adirondacks? How much taller is Mt. Marcy than Mt. Gray?

 

New York State Capitol

4. The New York State Capitol is located in the city of Albany. It is home to New York State's government. The Assembly and Senate meet in this building to make laws. The Governor also has offices in the Capitol. The building is famous for its beauty and varied architectural styles. You can learn more about the Capitol at www.assembly.state.ny.us/Tour/?sec=direct. Find the number of steps to the Great Western Staircase (Million Dollar Staircase). If you took 2 steps at a time, how many steps would you take to reach the top? Find the year when the Capitol fire occurred. How many years ago was the fire?

 

Statue of Liberty

5. The Statue of Liberty is located in New York City. It is one of our country's most famous attractions. It is a symbol of America as a place of freedom and opportunity. It was the first sight of America for many of our immigrants. To learn more about the Statue of Liberty go to www.endex.com/gf/buildings/liberty/liberty.html. Find out how many years it took to construct the statue, from the time construction began until it was completed in Paris. How many windows are in the crown of the statue? If there are 100 people in the crown, how many people could be at each window? The length of the statue's hand is 16' 5" (16 feet, 5 inches), how many inches is that?

 

Erie Canal

6. The Erie Canal is a man-made waterway that runs from Buffalo to Albany across New York State. It helped New York State become a leading economic power. Trade and travel across the United States grew significantly with the opening of the canal in 1825. For more information about the Erie Canal go to www.history.rochester.edu/canal/. How many years did it take to construct the canal? Find how many people lived in Rochester (a city on the canal) in February 1825, the year the canal opened? How many more people lived in Rochester ten years later?

 

Howe Caverns

7. Howe Caverns is a cave in Schoharie County. It is one of New York's leading tourist attractions. Many examples of underground rock formations can be found here, including stalagmites, stalactites, columns, and flowstone. To see more about Howe Caverns go to www.howecaverns.com/. Click on Cavern Classroom, then go to Geology and Chemistry. Under Stalactites, Stalagmites, and Flowstone find out how long it takes for these formations to grow 1 cubic inch. How long would it take to grow 10 inches? Go to Tickets, how much would it cost for 2 adults between 13-64, 2 adults over 65, and 3 children ages 4, 7, and 9 to tour the cavern?

 

Yankee Stadium

8. Yankee stadium is located in the Bronx, which is part of New York City. The stadium is home to the New York Yankees baseball team, the most successful sports team in American history. You can find out more about the "House that Ruth Built " by going to http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp//mlb/kids/index.jsp. Write down the number that shows how many kids have received the Little League Magazine. If you wanted to join the New York Yankees Fan Club, how much would it cost? If all the boys in the class wanted to join the New York Yankees Fan Club, what would be the total cost? If every student in your class wanted to join the fan club, what would be the total cost?

 

Bronx Zoo

9. When you are in the fifth grade, you may go to the Bronx Zoo for a field trip. There are over 4,000 animals to see at this zoo. Some of these animals are snow leopards, Congo gorillas and Siberian tigers. There is a great web site where you can find out many important facts on all the animals at this zoo. That site is www.Bronxzoo.com. After reading a brief history of the zoo, figure how how long ago the Bronx Zoo opened. Open the map of the zoo. Find the A Parking Lot, if you travel from there to the B Parking Lot, in what direction would you be heading? Remember to look for a direction symbol on the map. For a challenge try to determine the direction you would go from the B Parking Lot to the F Parking Lot.

 

Niagara Falls

10. Niagara Falls is a spectacular natural wonder. Forming one of the boundaries between New York and Canada, it is one of New York's most popular tourist attractions. Niagara Falls is made up of the Horseshoe Falls on the Canadian side and the American Falls. There have been many daredevils over the years who have gone over the falls inside of a barrel. Many did not survive the plunge. Interestingly, all the attempts have occurred on the Canadian side, due to fewer rocks in the basin. For more information and pictures go to www.infoniagara.com/. Click on the Imax icon. How long does the Imax movie last? If the show starts at 1:00 P.M. , what time will end? If a show ends at 3:00 P.M., what time did it start? For a challenge find what time a 4:25 showing of the movie would end. Click on Nightly Attractions. How many years ago were the Falls first illuminated? During the month of November how many total hours are the Falls lit?
