January Character Word "Kindness"

"Be Nice, Be Caring, Be Sensitive to other people's feelings"

What does it mean to be a kind person?

  • When you are a kind person you think about how your words and your actions are going to make someone else feel

  • You make the choice to say and do nice things

How can you show kindness?

You can show kindness by "filling buckets" because when you feel someone's bucket everyone is happy, but when you don't no one feels good or happy!

  • Say kind words

  • Volunteer at a food pantry, shelter, or animal shelter

  • Visit nursing homes or hospitals

  • Stand up for others

  • Smile at the person passing by

  • Include others

  • Ask someone to play when they are lonely

  • If someone is sad ask them if you can help or cheer them up

  • Send a note to someone you care about just to say "hi"

  • Write thank you notes to show appreciation

  • Offer to carry groceries, shovel someone's driveway, pick up trash

  • Offer to help out

  • And many, many more...

Ideas/Resources

Showing Kindness at Home and Everywhere

  • Set aside time each day for a week or once a week for each person in your family to name one person (a different person each time- a family member, a friend, a teacher, etc.) and have them share something kind about that person.

  • Have a note pad or board somewhere in the house or classroom and write down each time someone does something kind. At the end of the week count up how many there are and hopefully each week the number grows!

  • Encourage each other to volunteer, help carry the groceries, invite friends over to play, and assist others whenever they can.
