That is a great question! A School Counselor works with students
at all grade levels Kindergarten-12th grade. Some roles may
be different at each building, but all school
counselors are there to listen, act as a guide, and support
students, parents, and teachers to promote student success.
Elementary School is the time to instill good character, skills, and
knowledge necessary to become healthy and active members in society.
School Counselors can help provide this through programs, individual
counseling, small groups, and classroom preventive lessons.
An elementary school counselor works with students, parents,
teachers, other support staff, administrators and the community as a
team to make sure that each student has the opportunity for success.
The school counselor works with all students on personal and social
needs, academics, and career awareness. This is achieved through
preventive programs and classroom guidance lessons. In addition, the
school counselor works with small groups and individual students to
focus on specific needs, such as: various individual problems,
dealing with or talking about feelings, friendship, anger
management, problem solving, self-esteem, and study skills.
