That is a great question! A School Counselor works with students at all grade levels Kindergarten-12th grade. Some roles may be different at each building, but all school counselors are there to listen, act as a guide, and support students, parents, and teachers to promote student success.  

Elementary School is the time to instill good character, skills, and knowledge necessary to become healthy and active members in society. School Counselors can help provide this through programs, individual
counseling, small groups, and classroom preventive lessons.


An elementary school counselor works with students, parents, teachers, other support staff, administrators and the community as a team to make sure that each student has the opportunity for success. The school counselor works with all students on personal and social needs, academics, and career awareness. This is achieved through preventive programs and classroom guidance lessons. In addition, the school counselor works with small groups and individual students to focus on specific needs, such as: various individual problems, dealing with or talking about feelings, friendship, anger management, problem solving, self-esteem, and study skills.
