March set to be Parents as Reading Partners Month at Pinewood

Picture from P.A.R.P. assemblyThe month of March at Pinewood is being designated as P.A.R.P. -- Parents as Reading Partners - Month. The goal of P.A.R.P. is to promote a month-long literacy event that echoes through the classrooms and homes of our students and families, instilling in them the love and enjoyment of reading.

P.A.R.P. month kicked off on Tuesday, March 2 with an assembly to, among other things, celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday. Principal Michele Hunter read a book to students, while several "wild animals" visited the school. See below for video from assembly.

Pinewood has several more exciting activities scheduled throughout the month that are intended to spread the love of reading. To start, parents who wish to participate in the program are asked to read with their child for 10 minutes, five days a week, above and beyond what is expected in their classrooms. The P.A.R.P. Weekly Reading Log will need to be filled out and handed in to your child's teacher on the following Monday. Students can read with a parent, sibling, grandparent, aunt., etc.

Other activities included during P.A.R.P. Month are:

  • School-wide D.E.A.R. Time -- Drop Everything and Read -- once a week

  • "Put on Your Reading Caps" -- a hat day to promote reading (March 12)

  • A school-wide "Read-In" where students can wear their pajamas to school (March 5)

  • Scholastic Book Fair (March 15-19)

  • Author Visit by David Adler (March 15)

  • Every classroom will select their favorite book and decorate their classroom door and there will be a school-wide vote on March 25 to select Pinewood's favorite book
