Bullying expert coming to Mohonasen

Picture of Jodee BlancoNationally acclaimed bullying expert and author Jodee Blanco is coming to Mohonasen, bringing her anti-bullying program to students and parents.

Blanco will present to high school and middle school students during the school day on Wednesday, Nov. 16. That same evening, she will hold a parent/family seminar.

A bullying survivor turned activist, Blanco will share her powerful story and offer practical strategies and solutions for students, teachers and parents. She describes herself as “one of the country’s most persuasive and moving anti-bullying experts” who has addressed more than a half-million people in hundreds of school districts across the country.

The seminar, which is free and open to the public, will begin at 7 p.m. in the Mohonasen High School’s Farnsworth Technology Center. The public entrance is through the door at the parking lot near the tennis courts in the rear of the high school.

Blanco is the author of The New York Times bestseller, “Please Stop Laughing at Me…One Woman’s Inspirational Story” – a chronicle of her years as a student outcast – and “Please Stop Laughing at Us…One Survivor’s Extraordinary Quest to Prevent School Bullying.”

From fifth grade through the end of high school, Blanco was rejected and tormented by her peers for being different. She knows firsthand what it’s like to contemplate retaliation. As an adult, she decided to go public with her story because “she was frustrated by society’s misconceptions about the true cause of school tragedies,” such as the Columbine shooting and the Phoebe Prince suicide.

Blanco has successfully intervened in numerous bullying-related attempted suicides and acts of student retaliation, and is a respected crisis management consultant and expert witness in the area of school violence. She has appeared on CNN, NBC, FOX, “The Joy Behar Show,” “Anderson Cooper 360,” and National Public Radio – and is the “go-to expert” on bullying-related stories for top news shows like “Nancy Grace” and “Issues with Jane Valez Mitchell.”
