Thanks to grant, new pre-heaters will cut down on fuel, electricity use

Mohonasen recently received a $75,000 grant from the NYS Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) to retrofit 22 buses in the district’s bus fleet with engine pre-heaters.

According to the district’s Transportation Director Randy Jerreld, the pre-heaters run on a small amount of diesel fuel and can warm the buses without running the engine. The heaters will be all set on timers.

“This will cut down on idling time, which will save money on fuel and help reduce pollutants from these vehicles,” Jerreld said. “It will also cut down on the amount of electricity we use for engine block heaters.”

The block heaters are currently used to warm the bus engines during the cold winter months.

Mohonasen buses will be retrofitted with the new pre-heaters this fall and winter.
