New assessments planned for some students
Program is designed to measure student growth, is part of Race to the Top mandates
Oct. 7, 2011
As Mohonasen implements some of the new requirements that the state has mandated, you may hear about your child doing something different than they have in the past. One example of this is that this year, students in grades 4, 7, 8 and 9 will take a new online assessment– the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) assessment – designed to measure academic growth in the areas of reading, language and math. The assessment is designed to help determine each child’s instructional level, which in turn will help teachers better target their lessons for their entire class as well as for each child in the class.
MAP assessments are unique in that they adapt to each child’s learning level. Because of this, children should feel that the assessment situation is a positive one and each child should feel successful.
It should be noted that these assessments will not be factored into student grades. Rather, the tests focus on academic growth. If the data shows that a student is not demonstrating sufficient growth, the teacher will have specific information to assist them in revising instructional practices in order to better serve that student.
The assessments will be given three times this year.
