Recycling
proceeds donated to Family Fund
June 17, 2010
Recycling is all the rage at Pinewood these days -- and students are starting to see their efforts pay off.
It all started earlier this year when a group of students in Lori Ranze's and Kristin Tiano's third-grade class decided to start a recycling club after one of their mothers suggested that they start recycling their water bottles. After seeing some success in their classroom, they took their efforts to classrooms across the school. Since they started their school-wide recycling program in early May, the students have collected almost $59.
While that money will be used to purchase things for the school, Ranze and Tiano had the students in their class vote on how to spend the $50 that they collected through their classroom efforts, which were separate from the school-wide program. Several suggestions were made, but the students ultimately decided to donate $25 to the Pinewood Family Fund and to use the other $25 for a class ice cream party at Highbridge Twist.
Third graders Kelsey Hiscock, Samantha Bigness, Anthony Russo and Kelly DeMatteo presented members of the Pinewood Family Fund Committee with a check for the $25 during a classroom ceremony on June 17.
The Pinewood Family Fund provides families in the Pinewood community with monetary donations intended to lessen the financial strain that can come as the result of a tragedy such as a house fire, death, significant illness, etc. Money for the fund is raised through structured activities, which are overseen by a committee comprised of Pinewood Principal Michele Hunter, the school social worker Elizabeth Haynesworth and several classroom teachers. Anyone who wants more information about the fund should contact Ms. Haynesworth at 356-8430.
