Third graders saving the world one water bottle at a time

Students in Lori Ranze's and Kristin Tiano's third-grade class at Pinewood are hoping to change the world for the better -- and make a little money at the same time.
It all started when one student's mother suggested that the students recycle their water bottles, rather than throw them away. Not only would the students be helping make the earth a greener place, but they would also be earning a little bit of money since there is now a five cent deposit on plastic water bottles in New York State.
So far the students have earned $10.45 through their recycling efforts -- but it doesn't stop there.
Students are currently brainstorming ideas for how to spend the money they earn. So far, ideas include new books and/or board games for the classroom, a pizza party for the class or donating to a charity. Additionally, class members Kelly DeMatteo, Samantha Bigness and Kelsey Hiscock have started a Recycling Club. The girls say they hope to eventually make their club school wide, bringing their recycling program to every classroom at Pinewood.
"We're recycling to help the world be a better place," Samantha said.
