Emergency drill conducted at high school, middle school
April 13, 2010
This morning, members of the Rotterdam Police Department conducted an Emergency Response Team drill at Mohonasen High School and Draper Middle School. While the police were in the buildings, students and staff followed lock down procedures, including locking doors and windows, turning out lights and moving all students away from doors and windows.
Both schools have held similar drills in the last nine years.
Please note that this drill was previously scheduled and was in no way related to the bomb threat incident at Draper Middle School yesterday.
"In the last decade there have been several violent incidents in schools across the country," High School Principal David Collins said. "While we hope that nothing like that ever happens at Mohonasen, there is a need to be prepared and ready in the case of a true crisis situation."
Mohonasen officials are continually reviewing and updating the district's safety procedures. The district also has a strong partnership with local law enforcement officials.
Draper Middle School principal Debra Male added that Monday's evacuation of the middle school is proof that these emergency drills are working.
"Our students and staff took Monday's events very seriously and I want to thank them for that," she said.
