30 Pinewood students compete in spelling championship
Feb.
5, 2010
Fifth grader Emily Helinski correctly spelled "anemone" to win the Pinewood school-wide spelling bee on Thursday, Feb. 4 in the Mohonasen High School auditorium. The runner-up was fifth grader Connor Weatherwax.
"I thought I would get it wrong" Emily said about spelling anemone -- a noun that means "any of various plants belonging to the genus Anemone, of the buttercup family, having petal like sepals and including several wild species with white flowers as well as others cultivated for their showy flowers in a variety of colors (dictionary.com)."
As Thursday's winner, Emily will go on to compete in the Regional Spelling Bee at Proctor’s Theatre on March 15 at 5 p.m. This event will be televised. The Regional Spelling Bee champion will advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, DC.
