Author holds writing workshops at the high school
April 16, 2010
Lyn Miller-Lachmann, author of "Gringolandia,"
visited Mohonasen High School on March 31 in the LGI.
More than 100 students (from eighth graders to seniors, and from English, Spanish, and theater classes), as well as teachers and administrators, were captivated as Miller-Lachmann read from her novel, which tells the story of a young family forging a new life in America after fleeing Pinochet’s dictatorship in Chile. When their father joins them after many years of imprisonment and torture, teenaged Daniel finds himself caught between two worlds.
Following her presentation, Miller-Lachmann conducted two writing workshops for eighth- and ninth-grade students in the high school library. The workshops involved a “Bundle of Letters” activity where students took on the roles of characters in the story.
“Writing the letters from the character’s point of view allowed them to become, for the time, someone of the opposite gender or an adult rather than a teenager,” said Miller-Lachmann.
Students ended the session by taking on the role of their character and reading their letter aloud.
