Eighth
graders battle it out for Draper spelling bee title
Feb. 3, 2010
Eighth graders Jacob Nuding and Rachel Lambert went back and forth for more than 12 rounds before Jacob correctly spelled "tortellini" to come out on top. The two were among 20 Draper Middle School students who, after winning their classroom spelling bees, competed in a Draper school-wide spelling bee on Feb. 2. The entire event went for 28 rounds, most of which featured only Jacob and Rachel going word for word.
Lisa Cutting, the district's academic administrator for English, facilitated the event. She said the Draper students were among nine million students nation wide who are currently competing in similar spelling bees.
As Tuesday's winner, Jacob will go on to compete in the Regional Spelling Bee at Proctor’s Theatre on March 15 at 5 p.m. This event will be televised. The Regional Spelling Bee champion will advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, DC.
