'Composer of the Month' program leads to exciting partnership with WMHT
'Composer's Classroom' program starts Feb. 5
Jan. 29, 2010
Each month, Pinewood music teacher John Burmeister picks a different classical music composer to feature as the "Composer of the Month." Aside from learning the ins and outs of the composer's music, students learn biographical information -- where the composer was born, where they lived most of their life, how many children they had, etc.
Starting next Friday -- Feb. 5 -- WMHT's classical music radio station, WMHT-FM 89.1, will begin a new program called "Composer's Classroom." Every Friday morning, following the 7 a.m. newscast, the station will play a song by Pinewood's "Composer of the Month." All Pinewood students and parents are encouraged to tune in at that time! Students celebrate composer's birthday
For the month of January, the Composer of the Month was Philip Glass, who Burmeister describes as "one of the most famous living classical composers." One of the reasons Burmeister picked Glass is because Glass' birthday is Jan. 31. To celebrate this event, Burmeister invited students to a small birthday party in his classroom. In order to enter the room, students had to give Burmeister one biographical fact about Glass. Once at the party, students ate chips and pretzels while listening to Glass' music. Before the party ended, students sang "Happy Birthday."
February's Composer of the Month is John Williams, who composed some of the most well-known musical scores in Hollywood, including those for the Star Wars films, Superman, the first three Harry Potter movies, Indiana Jones, E.T., Jurassic Park and Jaws.
