Draper Alternative Education students use teamwork approach to create world map mural
Dec. 29, 2009
Students
in Draper’s Alternate Education program created a unique world map
during a class project called, “Paint with Pride.”
The project tapped into the students’ artistic abilities and social studies knowledge. First, students “prepped” the wall for the mural. They covered any existing holes, measured the room to determine how much paint was needed and applied a base coat. Then they used an overhead projector to blow up a world map to trace on the wall. Students mixed colors to make every country a different color or shade.
“Students gained a vast knowledge of the location and make-up of countries as they researched the names, capitals, and important geographical features,” said William VanWie, Alternative Education teacher. “They were really careful while painting and their patience paid off.”
The class will be using the map to study for the upcoming National Geography Bee.
Special thanks to TJ Hines for showing the Alternative Education class how to “prep” the wall.
