Pinewood students recreate outdoor habitats inside their classroom

For most, recreating an arctic tundra adorned with icicles, an ocean filled with sea creatures or a beaver dam inside of a classroom would be difficult. But for Kerry Vumbaco’s Developmental Skills class at Pinewood, it was a fun, year-long project.

The habitat project took the third- through fifth-grade students, with a wide range of abilities, on a journey through the tundra, an ocean, mountains, a rainforest, a pond and woods.

They took hikes outside, where they collected materials for their projects and studied the animals that they saw. They went on virtual field trips in the science lab, using the school’s Smartboard, and they used technology to create their end-of-year presentations using PowerPoint.

When asked what their favorite part was, the majority of students replied, “studying the animals.”

Thank you to the team of teachers who helped the Developmental Skills Class throughout the year: Mrs. Kline, Mrs. Lee, Mrs. Haynesworth, Ms. Armstrong, Mrs. Dergosits, Mrs. Wood, Mrs. Favre and Mrs. Chase.
