Mohonasen student earns internship at NYS Theatre Institute
June 22, 2009
This
coming fall, incoming high school senior Rachel Newman will be one
of 15 high schoolers statewide completing an internship with the
NYS Theatre Institute (NYSTI).
“This internship is a real job preview for students,” said NYSTI Intern Program Director Sara Melita. “Rachel will get to see the day-to-day operations of a professional theatre.”
Students must apply for the prestigious internship just as if they were applying for a job in the “real world” – complete with references and an interview.
As interns, students have the opportunity to work in several different areas at the institute. These include arts administration, the education department or the technical theater department. Interns can even be cast in a production or become an assistant stage manager.
This fall, students will be working on productions such as “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” “King Island Christmas” and “And Then There Were None.”
“It is wonderful to be able to watch the interns grow from their experience, and really find their place and voice in the theater,” adds Melita.
