Draper students visit Thacher Park
Oct. 24, 2008

On Oct. 17, Draper students on the 6-2 team visited Thacher Park in Voorheesville to enjoy a day at one of the area's finest scenic and geological attractions.
Students hiked the Indian Ladder Trail and studied the local rock formations, springs and caves. Students also looked for fossils and flint and conducted spear throwing as part of an interdisciplinary social studies unit.
This is the seventh consecutive trip that the 6-2 team at Draper has participated in and is often said to be one of the most memorable sixth grade experiences for students.
This
year's trip was of particular importance because students got to
visit an area where a recent, yet tragic scientific discovery was
made last year. The area's bat population was found to be inflicted
with a still unknown illness called "White Bat Syndrome."
White Bat Syndrome is
killing off the bat population at a startling rate and researchers
are still trying to find answers. Students were able to connect this real
world topic with the Thacher Park trip.
