TARC
team launches at Mohonasen
Dec. 19, 2008
In its second year, the Team America Rocketry
Challenge (TARC) team at Mohonasen has been busy building rockets.
But, these aren’t just any rockets. These rockets are entirely
designed, simulated and constructed by students. They are being
built to withstand an altitude of 750 feet and a flight duration of
45 seconds, all while bringing a load of eggs safely back to Earth.
This year, Mohonasen’s team consists of approximately 10 high school
and middle school students. The team is mentored by middle school
science teacher Jeremy Lundy, high school technology teacher George
Reluzco, and science academic administrator Gerald Garing. They meet
twice a week, and are currently in the design and building phase.
What
is TARC?
TARC is the world’s largest student-based rocket competition,
which takes place each year, and draws more than 7,000 students who
compete for $60,000 in prizes and scholarships.
It is sponsored by Aerospace Industries Association, NASA, Lockheed
Martin, Raytheon, the National Rocketry Association and many others.
The competition focuses on principles of science, engineering,
computer modeling, and mathematics, and is very demanding in its
competition requirements.
The top 100 qualifying teams from across the United States will
travel to Washington D.C. in the spring for the final contest.
Mohonasen is one of approximately seven schools from New York State
to register this year.
If you would like to sponsor the team or learn more about how you
can get involved, please contact Jeremy Lundy, George Reluzco or
Gerald Garing.
