Students participate in area science events

Picture of middle school science bowl teamMohonasen students recently participated in the Regional Science Bowl, which is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy and hosted by the GE Global Research Center in Niskayuna. In only its second year as a team, Mohonasen High School returned to earn a very respectable fourth place finish as students competed against 16 other schools from the Capital Region. Draper Middle School, competing for the first time, earned a fourth place finish among eight local schools. Both teams practiced regularly during the school year to prepare for the regional contest, which is a rapid quiz contest based on questions from all areas of science and math.

The high school team members are: Josh Bradt, Nate Hoke, Elizabeth Jackson, Amanda Laven, Katherine Martin, Alexis Willey and Danielle Miller. Tyler O'Connor and Sara McGrath are also on the team, but were not able to attend the science bowl. The team is coached by earth science teacher Nicole Zablotny and physics teacher Lua Rafalak. The level of competition requires familiarity with format and rules, as well as being knowledgeable in science and math.

Harley Crowther, Dan Hulseapple, Jena Sagendorf, Austin Scott, and Laura Treers make up the team from Draper. Coaches for the middle school team are Diana Jamack, Pinewood science lab instructor, and Gerald Garing, district science administrator. In addition to the question portion, the middle school contest included a race of cars powered by hydrogen fuel cells. Each team was provided a fuel cell and motor and had to design and build the rest.

Science Bowl is a tremendous opportunity for Mohonasen students to challenge themselves and interact academically with other students. We are proud to be represented by these students and hope they have set the standard for teams many years into the future.
