Mohonasen High School granted Project Lead the Way re-certification
Jan. 26, 2009
Mohonasen High School was recently granted a re-certification for teaching the Project Lead the Way (PLTW) pre-engineering program.
Re-certification means that Mohonasen High School is meeting or exceeding the standards required by PLTW.
Mohonasen’s involvement with PLTW dates back to the beginning of the program in 1997, when Mohonasen was one of the first twelve schools in New York State to offer the pre-engineering curriculum.
Teachers at Mohonasen High School have been teaching and developing the PLTW curriculum since the introduction of the program. Today over 3,000 schools across the country are offering the PLTW program.
Mohonasen currently offers seven PLTW courses at the high school as well as the Gateway to Technology classes at the middle school. High school students can select courses in:
Aerospace Engineering
Civil Engineering & Architecture
Computer Integrated Manufacturing
Design & Drawing for Production
Digital Electronics
Engineering Design & Development
Principles of Engineering
All PLTW courses are project based and they help students develop skills in: sketching, computer modeling, designing, building, testing, team work, time management, and the application of math and science. Many of the courses offer students a chance to earn college credit through the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) at a very reasonable cost.
Teachers are required to complete an intensive two-week training session at RIT for each PLTW course they teach. All members of the Mohonasen High School staff are certified in multiple classes. Guidance counselors also receive training at PLTW counselor conferences. For more information about the PLTW program, visit www.pltw.org.
