Pinewood
students listen to books on MP3 players
Oct. 27, 2008
What are Pinewood students listening to these
days? Don’t just assume its music.
Many Pinewood students are discovering the joy of listening to a
great story through Playaways. Playaways are portable MP3 players
with a book loaded into them. Using their own headphones, students
can listen to 60 titles that the Pinewood library has purchased.
According to Pinewood Librarian Minday Holland, Playaways are so
popular that as soon as one comes back the next student is eager for
a turn.
Titles include classics such as Charlotte’s Web and brand new
releases such as the 39 Clues series.
“The more students listen to audio books the more fluid they will
become as readers,” said Holland. “Playaways have a huge amount of
kid appeal. I’m thrilled to have another way to promote reading.”
The Playaways were partially funded by the Mohonasen PTO.
“Mrs. Holland consistently looks for ways to foster a love of
reading for all children. This is another way to engage children in
literacy,” said Pinewood Principal Michele Hunter. “We hope to add
more titles to our collection in the near future.”
