Mohon community raises more than $4,000 for Hannah's Hope Fund

Picture of Lori Sames accepting a check for Hannah's Hope FundMohonasen High School raised $1,714.16 through a recent Penny War fundraiser to help save the live of a little girl. But it didn't stop there.

The fundraising effort, which was organized by Mohonasen junior Caitlyn Collins, benefits Hannah's Hope Fund, a charity set up to save the life of a five-year old girl named Hannah who has a very rare terminal illness called Giant Axonal Neuropathy (GAN).

Large plastic jugs were set up in the high school--one for each grade level--and for two weeks students donated their loose change. When it was all said and done, the junior class won by 1,000 pennies.

However, once word got out, the donations came from all corners of the district, the community, and even the country.

Donations came from Bradt Primary School, the Draper 6th grade team, the Draper 8-2 French team and high school faculty and staff. Mike Collins from Luccias Two Go matched the funds raised by the high school. Donations came from other local businesses: Sahr's, Pede Brothers, Capri Imports, By George, Villa Italia, Orlando's School of Dance, and Rocco Rotundo of Prime Service Center. A donation even came from Steven Wertalik, an individual from Utah who happened to hear of the cause. There were also the members of the Rotterdam community who came to the school just to drop money into the collection jugs.

When it was all said and done, a total of $4,160 was raised for this very important cause.

Hannah's mother, Lori Sames, was presented with a check totaling this amount at the April 6 Mohonasen Board of Education meeting.

"This is the type of grassroots help we need from total strangers," Sames said. "We're deeply appreciative to all of you."
