Bradt
& Pinewood students working for a peaceful ride to school
Sept. 30, 2008
A peaceful bus is a safe bus - that's one of the many things students at Bradt and Pinewood schools are learning this year. Students at both schools are taking part in the Peaceful School Bus program, which is aimed at cutting down on behavior problems on school buses.
At the first Peaceful School Bus meeting of the year, students gathered according to the bus they ride to school and got to know a little bit more about the other children who ride their bus. The idea, school officials say, is to create a community on the school bus where everyone respects each other and knows one another.
Students learned about the six rules for a Peaceful Bus:
Stay seated at all times; the driver may tell you where to sit.
Always respect others, the bus and yourself.
Flinging
things in or out of the bus is not allowed.
Eating, drinking, and smoking on the bus are not allowed.
Talk quietly; no hurtful words.
You are responsible for your actions.
As part of the program, students each created and signed a contract agreeing to model behaviors that will help make their bus more peaceful. Here are some of the behaviors that bus #202 at Pinewood came up with:
Ask the driver for help;
Talk with your friends about any problems
you are having;
No eating or drinking;
Don't move to other seats;
Keep your hands to yourself;
Talk quietly and nicely;
Pick up garbage;
Be nice;
Listen to the driver; and
Don't get up while the bus is moving.
The Peaceful Bus Program will continue throughout the year at both Bradt and Pinewood. Students are reminded to stay safe and always follow the six rules for a Peaceful Bus.
