Two eighth graders raise money for foundation, are role models to classmates
Feb. 24, 2009
Two
Draper Middle School eighth-grade students took the meaning of
“giving” to a whole new level when they raised $500 through a bake
sale for the Brave Will Foundation.
It all started when the students, Shania Clark (pictured at left)
and Mariah Matarazzo (pictured at right), made a connection with a
former Draper teacher, Ms. DeFilippo, who now works in another
school district. Through this connection, the girls discovered that
Ms. DeFilippo currently has a family in her new class who has a
child with a rare form of cancer called AT-RT.
The girls were so moved by the story that they wanted to do
something to help. They put together a bake sale, where they raised
$500. The eighth graders are giving all of the proceeds to the Brave
Will Foundation, which will be presented to the
Albany Medical Center Research Program.
“It takes caring and special people to undertake charitable work and
it was absolutely heart-warming to see our two eighth graders take
this endeavor on,” said Draper Middle School Assistant Principal
Rosemary Soltis (pictured center). “Not only was it about donating money to the cause,
but it was also about a labor of love.”
Soltis added, “These two young people should be commended as being
great role models for their peers in the art of giving, especially
in the tough economic times we are in.”
Thank you to Mariah and Shania!
