Mohon band and colorguard first in the state

Picture of Mohonasen band studentsFor the first time in its history, the Mohonasen High School Marching Band and Colorguard can say it is first in the state. The band tied for first with Le Roy High School (Genesee County) at the New York State Field Band Conference Championship on Sunday, Oct. 26 at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse.

"They work so hard all year," Music Coordinator Keith Bushey said of the band students. "This was a really great thing for them."

Scores are based on difficulty and effectiveness on the field, he said. Together, the band and the colorguard need to create visual and musical effects that are appealing and show variety. Drum majors Jamie Roscoe and Audrey Sabatini, both seniors, said it was really great to see it all come together during the last couple of weeks.

"It felt really good," Jamie said. "I was really proud of the band."

This year's performance was called "Abstract Impulse" and was based on the work of Piet Mondrian, a Dutch painter who developed an art form called "Neo-Plasticism" in the early part of the 20th Century. This art form, Bushey explained, consists of a grid of vertical and horizontal black lines and the use of the four primary colors.

The band came home from the championship with the Governor's Cup trophy, which has been awarded to the top band in each division since 1976. This event was the last of several competitions this school year, which have left Mohon's band and colorguard and it's 107 students with an undefeated record for 2008. However, their work is far from over—the band will be performing in a number of area parades between now and the end of the calendar year.
