Pinewood community celebrates playground at ribbon cutting ceremony
June 2008
Thanks
to community members, local businesses, and families, Pinewood
raised over $80,000 to build a new playground for its students. On
June 13, the school held a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate all
of the efforts of the community over the past three years.
“As the new Principal at Pinewood, I would like to give special
thanks to the Playground Committee, Dr. Michael Johnson, former
Pinewood Principal, and Todd Shafer, Pinewood's building leader,”
said Pinewood Principal Michele Hunter.
At the ceremony, students talked about the playground and how
thankful they were for everyone’s help.
“This playground is wonderful, I mean we have so much fun at recess
time, and kids can play thanks to all of you,” said Geoff Heller,
third grade student.
Fourth grade student, Michael Carnavos, and fifth grade student,
Danielle Sicilia, cut the ribbon as the crowd cheered (pictured at

Pinewood’s student council, led by Ms. Carrie Townsend and Ms.
Amanda Brousseau, represented the student body and held up signs to
thank everyone for the playground. The Pinewood band, directed by
Mrs. Kimberley Hitchcock, played a piece entitled “The Playground
March,” composed by Mrs. Hitchcock specifically for this event.
The final phase of the playground project is due to be completed in
the fall, as the Town has committed to pave two areas on the
playground—one for a basketball area and one for hopscotch and four
square.
“This celebration represents a culmination of the efforts of our
parents, community, and businesses that made this dream a reality
for our students,” said Hunter.
