Amedore watches Pinewood students spread their creative wings

Picture of Assemblyman George Amedore with two Pinewood studentsThe Karner Blue Butterfly is an endangered species and can be found in nearby places such as the Pine Bush Preserve. It is also the butterfly that the majority of Pinewood students voted for in a state-wide contest to name the official state butterfly.

On Friday, December 21, Mrs. Vumbaco’s class shared their special butterfly video presentation and posters with Assemblyman George Amedore.

Aside from learning about butterflies that are native to New York State, Vumbaco’s class showcased their knowledge of their class theme, “planting and growing” through a variety of disciplines. In science they learned about the importance of planting and growing, which ties into the Social Studies curriculum where they located areas on a map, and learned about different landforms and bodies of water. Technology also played a big role in the vote. Prior to Amedore’s arrival, Vumbaco’s students created videos and shared them with the rest of the Pinewood student body so that they could make an informed decision when casting their votes. Pinewood students could also access facts about the butterfly candidates online and actually voted on their favorite butterfly on the computer.

While visiting with students, Amedore talked about the election process and explained how he is one of the representatives voting to help choose the official NYS butterfly.

Results from elementary students across the state are being compiled, and the NYS Senate and Assembly will vote on the official state butterfly sometime this spring.
