Société Honoraire de Français
French Honor Society
The Société Honoraire de
Français (SHF) is an honor society whose aims are to promote the study
of the French language and culture and to recognize scholastic
achievement. To these ends, the following by-laws have been adopted:
RESPONSIBILITIES OF MEMBERSHIP
A member must:
1. Maintain the required scholastic standing;
2. Comply with the Mohonasen Code of Conduct and all regulations and
policies pertaining to student conduct, as established by the Mohonasen
Board of Education;
3. Attend meetings;
4. Participate in all chapter activities;
5. Participate in the annual induction ceremony and rehearsal;
6. Pay the one-time induction fee of $15.00.
PRIVILEGES OF MEMBERSHIP
A member is afforded:
1. Participation in chapter activities;
2. Participation in privileges that the principal may offer to reward
honor students;
3. The honor of including SHF as a school activity on college résumés or
job applications
4. The right to wear the SHF red, white, and blue honor cord at
graduation;
5. The right to the SHF seal on his/her diploma.
SUSPENSION/TERMINATION OF MEMBERSHIP
1. Members should be aware that maintenance of high academic standards
is of utmost importance. Therefore, failure to maintain the required
scholastic standing for one quarter will result in an academic warning
letter. If the member’s cumulative average continues to fall below the
required standard, termination of membership will likely result.
Individual circumstances, such as long-term illness, may be taken into
consideration and a second warning issued instead of a dismissal.
Calculation of the student’s averages will begin with the fourth quarter
of the year in which he or she is inducted into SHF.
2. Of equal importance to a student’s academic achievement is compliance
with rules and regulations concerning conduct. Therefore, the first
instance of internal or external suspension will result in a written
warning. The second instance will result in dismissal from SHF.
Any disciplinary infraction involving but not limited to drugs, alcohol,
weapons, physical violence, verbal abuse or threats, or infractions of
civil laws will result in immediate dismissal from SHF. No warning
letter will be issued.
3. Attendance at meetings and participation in all activities -
including fund-raising events and service projects - are mandatory.
Attendance will be reviewed at the end of each quarter, and a member who
has been absent more than 25% of the time will receive an attendance
warning letter. If the attendance has not improved to 75% by the end of
the next quarter, membership will be terminated.
To assess participation each member will be asked to sign a log of
activities in which they participate. To receive a financial subsidy for
SHF activities that cost money (for example, a field trip,) a member
must document participation in at least one fund-raising event.
4. Any combination of three written warnings may result in dismissal.
5. Any decision to terminate a student’s membership in the SHF will be
made in consultation with the high school principal. The principal and
the SHF advisors will evaluate each situation individually and use their
discretion in enforcing the by-laws.
INACTIVE MEMBERS
Inactive members are those who are no longer enrolled in French but who
meet all other criteria. These members receive the same privileges as
active members with one exception: they are not allowed to be an officer
of SHF. These members are subject to all the responsibilities and
regulations outlined in these by-laws.
Any member, active or inactive, who resigns or is dismissed from SHF is
no longer eligible for membership or its benefits.
