The goal of health and physical education courses is to encourage students to be physically active and expand their understanding of personal habits and
their importance in promoting short- and long-term physical health. In addition to class instruction, an extensive intramural program is offered to students.

Graduation Requirements

All students are required to earn two units in physical education over the course of four years. This entails students taking PE every other day throughout high school. Students who fail PE will be rescheduled for two PE courses the following semester.

Students unable to take PE will be given written assignments to earn credits. The assignments can be found on the Mohonasen High School Physical Education Web page. In such cases, a written statement from a doctor must be given to the school nurse in a timely fashion.

All students also are required to complete a health course. Mohonasen has added the state-mandated parenting course to the health curriculum.

Physical Education Grading

All students’ physical education classes will be graded using a rubric. For every absence, four points will be subtracted from a student’s average. If a student does not participate (taking a “0”), he/she will loose seven points. Students will be allowed to make–up (and receive full credit for) all excused absences and two “0’s” per quarter during after-school make–ups. The schedule for make–ups is posted outside the physical education offices. Students also are required to complete at least one project per year.

Course Offerings

Physical Education 9

All ninth graders are required to complete a five-week swimming unit in the school’s pool. Girls are required to wear one-piece swimsuits. Boys are required to wear swim trunks/shorts (no cut-offs). White tee-shirts may be worn over bathing suits, and girls can wear nylon shorts over their swimsuits. All students must supply their own towels. In addition to the swimming unit, students are introduced to a variety of other sports and activities.
