The family and consumer sciences program helps students become competent and self-reliant in managing their personal, family, and work lives. It is designed to meet the needs of students interested in careers in human services, education, family services, social work, nutrition, culinary, fashion design, textiles and interior design.

Sequences and Requirements

In order to receive a five-unit sequence in family and consumer science, students
must take and pass:

  • Introduction to Business

And at least two of the following four core courses:

  • Clothing and Textiles

  • Housing and Environment

  • Lifespan Studies Core

  • Food and Nutrition

Students may earn their other credits through any of the family and consumer science courses.

Course Offerings

Housing and Environment See video from class

This course will aid students in the principles and elements of housing and environment design, as well as provide knowledge of the history of design. Students will do multiple design projects leading to the dream home design final project, where they will design each room of the home, including layouts and color schemes. This course relates to careers in interior design, CADD, and architecture.

Child Development I

This course focuses on the physical, social, emotional, and cognitive development during the prenatal, infant, and toddler stages of life. This course relates to careers in human services and education. Activities include movies, “Toddler Buddy Day,” creating a pregnancy resource book, designing a toddler play project, as well as other observations and projects.

College Credits: 3 credits may be earned at Maria College, SUNY Cobleskill, and HVCC with student taking the challenge test.

Child Development II

This course focuses on the physical, social, emotional and cognitive development during the preschool and school-age stages of life. Related to careers in human services and education. Activities include movies, “Preschool Buddy Day,” "Kids Day," creating a preschool play project, as well as other observations and projects.

Prerequisite: Child Development I (may be waived with teacher approval)
Final: Project/Exam

Clothing and Textiles See video from class

This course will aid students in understanding the principles of clothing and textile construction. It will provide knowledge of impressions made by
personal appearance, history of fashion, care selection, and maintenance of clothing. This course relates to careers in fashion, textiles, and art. Course includes field trip to fabric store to buy materials for projects. Projects may include designing and creating pajama pants and tote bags.

Family Dynamics

This course focuses on the various ways the family unit functions within society. The manner in which interpersonal relationships influences this function is identified and studied. The family unit, managing life in a family, family roles, family functions, managing family challenges, relationships, and surviving as a single person will all be explored. This course relates to careers in human services and education. Activities include movies, videos, observations, and projects. These projects may include a family crisis coping skills project and/or a family portrait project.

Early Childhood Education

This course provides an in–depth study of early childhood education. Students will gain knowledge in the history of early childhood education, curriculum writing skills, developmental theory, and application of theory. Activities include movies, videos, “Kindergarten Buddy Day,” and a variety of group and individual projects that may include a "Model Kindergarten" project and a "Boy's Life" video project.

Lifespan Studies Core (Hum. Develop.)

This course is designed to help the student understand the adolescent’s role in the community as well as the family unit. It covers ways in which adolescents relates to persons of all ages using practical applications. This course relates to careers in human services. Activities include movies, interviews, and a lifespan project and a "Resource Day."

Food and Nutrition

This course is designed to help students understand nutrition, as well as learn basic culinary skills. Students will research the USDA food guide, comparison shop, and plan and prepare nutritious meals. Students will complete a research paper, a "Nutrition Awareness" project, and food preparation labs. This course relates to careers in culinary arts, dietetics and nutritional education.

Parenting

This course focuses on learning an active approach to parenting. It will help students clarify their own goals for the future and teach effective methods for leading children throughout the stages of life. Students will explore parenthood for a day with “Baby Think It Over.” Other activities include movies, “Buddy Day,” observations, and "Parent Responsibilities," "Parenting Myths," and "Learning Values" projects.

Childhood Education Career Exploration Internship Program (CCEIP)

This is a one-year, non-paid, 108-hour internship. It is a link between school and careers involving the education of children. Students are placed with a classroom teacher in Bradt Primary School, Pinewood Elementary School, or Draper Middle School. Students will experience all aspects of the teaching profession. They will be able to improve their teamwork, leadership, and human relation skills. Students will fill out time sheets, journals, and work on related activities, such as researching educational trends. Students wishing to be a part of this program must fill out and submit an application. Each applicant also must be interviewed by the program coordinator. The internship is scheduled during the school day and transportation is provided.

Childhood Education Cooperative Work Experience

This is a one-year paid work experience in the field of early childhood education. Students are employed by local day care and after-school programs. Students will realize the importance of career decisions and become familiar with the responsibilities in the world of work. Students are required to meet with the Early Childhood Education COOP Coordinator bi-weekly. Students earn one credit for every 300 hours of work, up to 2 credits possible.
