Many Mohonasen High School students were recently honored at the 2009 Academic Awards Ceremony. Below is a listing of the awards and those students who were recognized. Congratulations to all!
Community Based Awards and Scholarships
Kyle A. Gagnon Perserverance Scholarship Award
John Paul Brown
This $250.00 scholarship is established in the memory of Kyle A. Gagnon, a member of the Mohonasen Class of 2010. This annual scholarship will be awarded to a male member of the junior class who has participated in at least one varsity sport. The scholarship will recognize an athlete who consistently demonstrates character, leadership and an unparalleled work ethic while involved in the Mohonasen athletic program. This athlete, while not necessarily a starter on the team, is one his teammates respect and admire. Kyle’s family and friends take great pride in presenting this scholarship and keeping Kyle’s memory forever alive.
Julia Benington Scholarship

Four $500.00 scholarships are being awarded to seniors who are planning to major in education at college. The awards are sponsored by a trust that was set up by Mrs. Julia Benington. Mrs. Benington was a teacher in the Draper School District for 56 years. Her wishes were to promote and encourage students to further their education.
Herff Jones Principal's Leadership Award

High school principals were invited to nominate a student leader on the basis of their leadership skills, participation in service organizations and clubs, achievements in the arts and sciences, employment experience, and academic record.
Clarkson University Leadership Award

This Leadership Award is an award given to a junior in the top 15% of his or her class, who has demonstrated outstanding leadership qualities. This student is eligible to receive a $44,000.00 tuition scholarship to Clarkson.
Clarkson University Achievement Award

This Achievement Award is an award given to a junior in the top 15% of his or her class, who has demonstrated outstanding achievement in academics. This student is eligible to receive a $36,000.00 tuition scholarship to Clarkson.
Michael L. Collura Memorial Scholarship

Michael L. Collura, a member of the Class of
1985, was involved in a wide variety of activities within the school
and community. Whether it was athletics or academics, Michael always
strove to do his best. Family and friends were always more important
to Michael than personal success.
Michael jumped headlong into life’s adventures, cultivating its
opportunities, and engaged with gusto its questions, giving
particular attention to how best to live a full and compassionate
life. Above all, Michael L. Collura was a generous and giving
person, who played a large role in the lives of his family and
friends. His spirit and memory will live on in the hearts of those
he knew and loved.
Mont Pleasant Lodge No. 717, I.O.O.F.

Mt. Pleasant Lodge No. 717 presents this $100.00 scholarship to a graduating senior who has shown character and commitment throughout their high school career.
NYS Superintendents of Buildings and Grounds Scholarship

The Capital District Chapter of the NYS Superintendents of Buildings and Grounds has selected a senior as recipient of this year’s award for $1000.00 to be used toward college expenses.
Leonard K. Doviak Memorial Scholarship

The Schenectady County Chamber Foundation sponsors this $1000 scholarship. Seniors attending any of the seven public high schools in Schenectady are eligible to apply. Students must have an average between 75 and 85, be dedicated to civic affairs and community involvement, and be knowledgeable about business by participating in an internship or holding a job outside of school.
Phi Delta Kappa International Prospective Educator Scholarship

This $300.00 award is granted to a student in honor of their outstanding academic performance and their goal to pursue a career in education.

These $1,000.00 awards are given to graduating seniors who are committed to attending college and who have demonstrated continued improvement throughout high school.
First New York Federal Credit Union Scholarship

The First New York Federal Credit Union is pleased to award this $1000.00 scholarship to a qualified and deserving student. This student and his family were recognized at a dinner on May 7th at Glen Sanders Mansion.
Student Sage Recognition Award

This student was nominated by Mohonasen High School as the junior who most embodied the Russell Sage motto: “To Be, To Know, To Do.” Her nomination confirms clearly that she possesses the characteristics of academic excellence, student leadership, and community involvement, which have defined Sage women for nearly a century. We are pleased to acknowledge those traits with this award. With this nomination, this young woman is eligible for a scholarship ranging up to $15,000.00 for each year of study, should she attend Russell Sage College.
Volunteer Community Service Award

The First Annual Student Volunteer Community Service Award is being given by the Capital District School Boards Association (CAPSBA) to a graduating senior who stands out for making a difference through exceptional volunteer community service. This student was recognized at a dinner on May 21st at the Century House in Latham.
William B. Haessig Memorial Scholarship

A $300.00 scholarship, in memory of Mr. Haessig, former Superintendent of Schools, is given to a student pursuing a degree in education. The student must demonstrate community involvement and a commitment to academics.
Hudson Valley Community College Book Award

This $250.00 book award is given to a senior attending HVCC to recognize his/her hard work and individuality.
Harold J. Vogl Memorial Scholarship
Steven Delmonaco
The friends and family of former district employee Harold “Hal” Vogl present this $300.00 scholarship in his memory. Hal was an avid sportsman and outdoorsman and this award is given to a student pursuing a course of study related to preserving the environment. This year’s recipient will be majoring in chemical engineering, with the intent to research alternative fuel sources.
Kingsway Community Human Services Scholarship

The Resident and Family Service Department of Kingsway Arms Nursing Center wanted to do something in honor of Social Work Month, which is in May. Money was raised through a series of basket raffles, bake sales and soup sales and the owners matched the raised funds. From this money, a scholarship fund was started for students furthering their education in the field of Human Services. Two students received a $1500.00 scholarship to further their educations.
Leaders of Tomorrow Scholarship

Audrey will be attending Siena in the fall of 2010 after
participating in a foreign exchange program to Belgium for a year.
The New York State Lottery awards the Leaders of Tomorrow Scholarship to one exceptional senior from every high school in New York State. Each winner receives a $5000.00 scholarship over four years.

For exceptional service to the Mohonasen Chapter of Key Club, International, we present this $100.00 award to an outstanding member of the Mohonasen Class of 2009.
Steven C. Mintz Memorial Award
Audrey Sabatini
Steven C. Mintz graduated from Mohonasen High School in 1983 ranking in the top 3% of his graduating class. His high school career was characterized not only by outstanding academic achievement but unselfish service to others. He later attended Rochester Institute of Technology and then worked with high technology computers for IBM. It was discovered in 1985 that he had a brain tumor and during his recuperation from operations and treatment, he volunteered many hours as a tutor for Mohonasen High School students. His interventions made the difference between success and failure for many of these students. Steven passed away in February 1993. The family of Steven C. Mintz has established a memorial scholarship to be given annually to a student who has demonstrated high academic achievement, ranks in the top 10% of his/her class, and served his/her school and community. The recipient's personality should be reflective of the unselfish dedication and human compassion that characterized Steven's life. This is a $300.00 award.
Hugh O'Brien Youth Foundation Award

The opportunity to attend the HOBY 4-day workshop is annually awarded to a sophomore. Recipients are chosen based on leadership skills, ability to work well with others, and a demonstrated desire to learn and share new experiences. The Rotterdam Kiwanis Club sponsors attendance at the workshop.

The Kiwanis Club of Rotterdam offers this $250.00 award to an outstanding member of the graduating class of 2009 who plans to pursue a college program. This student must be a member of the Mohonasen Key Club.
George Eastman Young Leaders Award and Scholarship

Based on strong academic achievement and leadership skills, the University of Rochester recognizes a member of the junior class with a potential $30,000.00 scholarship over four years of study at the university. This student displays participation in and dedication to varied, extensive and time-consuming co-curricular activities.

The Mangino family takes great pride in presenting a $1000.00 scholarship to a senior member of the Mohonasen Golf Team.
Brian D. Minbiole Memorial Scholarships

Brian D. Minbiole graduated from Mohonasen in 1996. During his time at Mohonasen, Brian proved to be a student with exceptional integrity, character, and outstanding sportsmanship. The Brian D. Minbiole Memorial Scholarships are $2000.00 scholarships awarded to Mohonasen seniors who played at least one varsity sport and whose average is between an 80 and an 89.
National Society Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizens Award

This award is intended to encourage and reward the qualities of good citizenship. The student selected must have the qualities of dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism.
Steven M. Perez Foundation Award
Joseph Watroba
The Steven M. Perez Foundation was formed following Steven’s untimely death due to the devastation of Leukemia. In his name, the Foundation has awarded approximately 50 college scholarships and has sent over 50 children struggling against Leukemia to medically-supervised summer camps. This year they are awarding Joe with $1500.00 in hopes to continue to improve the lives of those who battle this disease.

The Mohonasen Board of Education awards this $200.00 grant to an outstanding senior who ranks in the top 10% of his/her class and who is going on to further his/her education.
American Cross High School Challenge Scholarship

This student is being recognized by Mohonasen and the American Red Cross with the receipt of this scholarship in the amount of $400.00 for his/her commitment and hard work. This is made possible due to the dedication of the Student Senate in holding two blood drives and having an 80% growth rate in the number of donors.

The Rotterdam Elks Jake Baurel Scholarship Award, a $1000.00 scholarship, has been given to a Mohonasen senior who has demonstrated outstanding academic standing and community service. He was honored at the Lodge’s Annual Youth and Government Day ceremonies held recently.

Two $500.00 awards are given to seniors planning to attend a post-secondary institution. The recipients demonstrate responsibility and respect toward fellow students and faculty, good citizenship and support for community affairs.

The Scholars' Recognition Program honors two members of the 2009 senior class who have distinguished themselves as outstanding scholars.
*Each student was asked to select a teacher who has had a significant and beneficial influence on him/her. Jamie selected Ms. Kimberly Hitchcock, her Music teacher and Joshua selected Mr. Rob Higgins, his Math teacher. These students and teachers were honored at a dinner held in May.

Grand Lodge Sons of Italy Scholarship

Grand Lodge of the State of New York, Order Sons of Italy in America is pleased to present a scholarship to a member of the Mohonasen Class of 2009 based on academic performance and commitment to the community. This award will be presented to this senior on June 13th in Suffern, NY.
United States Navy
Joshua Burke, US Navy Nuclear Field Program, enlists on Active Duty in the US Navy on August 25, 2009. As a trained nuclear technician, he’ll perform duties in nuclear propulsion plants, operating reactor control, propulsion and power generation systems. After training for up to 18 months in college level physics, chemistry, mathematics, electrical engineering and thermodynamics, he will receive nuclear engineering training in nuclear power plant design, construction, instrumentation and operations.
The American Council on Education (ACE) has recommended, because of the extensive nature and unsurpassed quality of the Navy’s nuclear propulsion training program, that he be eligible to receive up to 77 semester hours of college credit.
When Joshua serves honorably for 36 months, he’ll automatically be eligible for the Montgomery GI Bill and he’ll have access to up to the maximum tuition for any state university where he lives in the US. Plus, he’ll get a housing allowance as a full time student that will be equal to that of personnel serving on active duty in pay-grade E-5. That’s about $1174.00 per month in Schenectady, NY for personnel without a spouse or child. Also, he’ll be able to access 100% tuition assistance to attend college part time while he serves in the Navy.

The Capital District YMCA presents Outstanding Senior Youth Awards to students based on their community service, school and extracurricular activities, as well as academic achievement. Nominated students and educators were honored at a breakfast hosted by the YMCA.

The New York State Board of Regents joins us in congratulating Mohonasen High School students who have received Scholarships for Academic Excellence based on their Regents Exam scores throughout their high school careers. If these students attend a school within New York State, their scholarships can be applied toward their tuition at that school.

The New York State Education Department awards approximately 400 Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarships to graduating seniors who have a minimum test score of 1875 on the SAT and a minimum GPA of 95 on a Byrd scoring system. We are pleased to recognize seven Mohonasen High School students who were nominated this year to receive this award.

Our grandfather, Jack August, had a deep love for photography. He had a superior talent and love for taking pictures of common, everyday objects in a unique light that defined emotions in life. His photographs ranged from pictures of his son drinking out of a hose to the harbor at his favorite vacation spot. This scholarship will be presented to a student who has the similar interest and love for photography or fine arts. It is our hope that this scholarship will help others to use their talents to express their own unique visions of life as our grandfather did.

Coach Tom McCarthy Sportsmanship Awards

Coach Tom McCarthy, longtime coach and retired Director of Athletics at Mohonasen, always took great pride in the sportsmanship displayed by our athletes at Mohonasen. To that end, he is recognizing three senior athletes who have displayed sportsmanship throughout their high school careers.
Donna Rae Robitaille Scholarship

Donna Rae Robitaille was a graduate of Mohonasen Central Schools and has now retired from teaching physical education at South Fallsburg, Benjamin Cosor Elementary School after teaching for over 28 years. She later went on to pursue a degree in law. Her wish is to award a $250.00 scholarship to a deserving student planning to major in physical education or law and who has shown character throughout her high school years.
Mohonasen Sports Boosters Apollo and Artemis Awards

The Apollo and Artemis awards are presented annually to Mohonasen’s top senior male and female student athletes. The award is based on the cumulative total of academic average and the total athletic points earned in sports participations.
Sports Foundation Scholar Athlete Awards

Principals and athletic directors from area high schools nominated one young man and one young woman from their senior class student bodies who exemplify the qualities of a true scholar/athlete. Each student was nominated to receive a $2,000.00 savings bond sponsored by MVP Health Plan and the Times Union. They were recognized at a gala dinner in May.

This national awards program, created by Wendy’s, the National Association of Secondary School Principals and the Downtown Athletic Club in New York City, recognizes academic achievement, community service, and athletic accomplishments of high school senior men and women.

The Balfour Company gave this $300.00 award to a senior planning on pursuing a business-related program at a four-year school.
Business and Marketing Honor Society of New York State

Acceptance into this Business Honor Society is based upon earning a minimum of 3 credits in business education, maintaining an 88 average in all business courses, maintaining an 80 average in all other academic courses. Students must also demonstrate the qualities of character, leadership and community service.
McDonald's Business Scholarship

McDonald’s of Rotterdam, locally owned and operated, presents a $500.00 award to a graduating senior who has excelled in the business curriculum at Mohonasen High School. This student is planning to pursue a degree in a business-related field while attending college.

This award is given to a graduating senior in the business program who has excelled in the business curriculum. This student plans to continue his/her education at an institute of higher learning in the field of business.
Family and Consumer Science Awards
Outstanding Achievement in Family and Consumer Science

Selection is based upon earning a minimum of a three-unit sequence
in Family and Consumer Science, exhibiting high standards of
performance, and modeling the life skills learned in the Family and
Consumer Science courses taken.
This year two students met the criteria for this award. Both of
these students have demonstrated their complete understanding of how
important it is to be the best role model for the children they have
come in contact with in the Early Childhood Education CEIP and COOP
Programs.
Foreign Language Awards
Mother Rose of Lima Foreign Language Award
Joshua Bradt
Mother Rose of Lima, President of the College of Saint Rose, died on
April 1, 1962. She was a member of the founding faculty of the
college in 1920. In the interim years, she served as Professor of
Latin and Greek, Dean of the college, and President from 1949 until
1953. She was the embodiment of the spirit and ideals she sought to
inculcate in those who came under her guidance. To her memory, this
small tribute is dedicated. This award is given by the Schenectady
Chapter College of St. Rose.

A Certificate of Merit is presented to seniors, who for excellence
in French, have been inducted into the Mohonasen Chapter of the
French National Honor Society. These students have maintained an
average of 90 percent or above in French and an average of 80
percent or above in
their other academic subjects.

This year, the French Honor Society presents a scholarship award to one senior currently enrolled in French. This award recognizes the student’s exemplary achievement.

Each year we recognize those seniors, who through scholarship in
Spanish in particular, as well as scholarship in general, have
become members of the Mohonasen Chapter of the Spanish National
Honor Society. These students have achieved a minimum average of 90
in Spanish and 80 in all other subjects.

This year the Spanish Department is awarding prizes for outstanding
achievement to two students who have excelled in Spanish for 5
years.

Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony Award in the Humanities and Social Sciences

The University of Rochester is pleased to sponsor a national program
to recognize outstanding juniors in the humanities and/or social
sciences. Winners of this award are eligible to apply for places in
the Merit Scholar Program at the University of Rochester. Those
selected as Merit Scholars receive a scholarship award of $30,000.00
over four years. Selection of this student is based upon achievement
in the humanities and/or social sciences, level of coursework,
leadership, and community service.
Math and Science Awards
Bausch & Lomb Science Award
Sarah DeThorne
Based on academic achievement and instructor recommendations, the
Bausch & Lomb Optical Company of Rochester, New York, grants this
award to the junior who has been most outstanding in the study of
science during his/her high school career. This award makes her/him
eligible for $30,000.00 worth of scholarship money over four years
at the University of Rochester.
Maxwell Plotnik Memorial Award

An inscribed plaque is awarded to the 9th grade student who has
achieved the highest three-year average in science.
Santabarbara Scholarship Fund

The Santabarbara Scholarship Fund was made available to recognize members of the senior class continuing their education in the fields of math and science. The award is intended to ensure that local students are prepared for potential careers within the field of engineering. Qualifications include a minimum grade point average of 85, involvement in the school community, and a commitment to attending a four-year college or university upon graduation.

Joan Wells Scholarship Fund

Mrs. Joan Wells was a mathematics teacher in the Mohonasen school system for 22 years. In her memory, her husband, Mr. W. Peter Wells, has established a scholarship. Each year, this $500.00 award will be given to a graduating senior who has exhibited a strong academic record in math and science courses. This student must be pursuing a degree in math, science or engineering. Each year, students will complete an essay outlining their future plans as related to math and science.
Rensselaer Medal

A medal awarded to a junior who ranks in the top 10 percent of their class and has displayed outstanding achievement in mathematics and science. The medalist is eligible for a $60,000.00 scholarship, should he/she choose to attend RPI.
RIT Computing Medal

Each year, the Rochester Institute of Technology awards the RIT Computing Medal to one male and one female in their junior year, ranked in the top ten percent of their class. These students must demonstrate leadership and an interest and ability in the field of computing. Each approved nominee will automatically receive a Computing Medal Scholarship valued at $24,000.00 upon their enrollment at RIT in the fall of their graduating year.

This $150.00 award is given to a college bound senior with four years of outstanding participation in the Mohonasen Marching Band. The recipient demonstrates solid academics and a high degree of personal motivation, commitment, and energy to the ideals of Mohonasen High School and the Mighty Warriors Marching Band. First consideration is given to a member of the band's front line.
Anthony Cuda Memorial Scholarship

The Mohonasen Music Parents Association in memory of Anthony Cuda, who was a member of the Mohonasen Music Staff, awards this scholarship annually, totaling $500.00. The recipient is a member of the Senior High Concert Band.
Robert Heath Memorial Scholarship

These scholarships are awarded annually by the Mohonasen Music Parents Association in honor of the late Robert Heath, a former member of the Mohonasen Central music staff. These awards are presented to two seniors in the amount of $250.00 each.

The Odasz Memorial Music Appreciation Prize is a grant awarded to a student who has displayed outstanding interest in the study of music, appreciation for music, and interest in continuing some phase of music after high school, and outstanding school and community citizenship.

The Reverend David E. Rohs was an established and well-respected member of the Mohonasen community as well as an established member of the Rotterdam Sunrise Rotary. His commitment to the students and families of Mohonasen is something that will rest in the memories of those whose lives he touched. In his memory, we are pleased to announce the recipient of the Reverend David E. Rohs Memorial Scholarship. We are delighted to have the opportunity to present this year's award to a fine young man.
John Philip Sousa Band Award

The prestige and honor of the John Philip Sousa Band Award is given to the high school band students who have, as members, exhibited excellence in performance and leadership throughout their four years in the concert band.

Lucille and Anthony Verruto Memorial Music Scholarship

Avid enthusiasts of the Mohonasen Music Department, the late Lucille and Anthony Verruto were both proud and honored to attend over 30 years of musical performances. This award is designed to recognize an outstanding senior whose ethics demonstrate the hard work and dedication that makes each one of us “Mohonasen Proud”. The recipient must be active in the music program and exemplify the traditions, values and high standards of this fine district. In addition, he or she must be planning on attending college in the fall.
David Bournazian Scholarship Fund

With over forty years of service in the Mohonasen Central School District, David Bournazian, more fondly known as “Mr. B”, has had a positive and everlasting impact on the lives of close to two thousand students. There are few, if any educators who have committed so much of themselves to music education with such dedication, enthusiasm and caring as “Mr. B”.
He exemplifies the qualities of excellence through attitude, demonstrated effort and continued commitment and instills these qualities in youngsters as noted by a phrase he repeatedly states, “The Attitude is the Key to Success”.

The Tri-M Music Honor Society is the International Music Honor Society for high school students. It is designed to recognize students for their academic and musical achievements, reward them for their accomplishments and service activities, and to inspire other students to excel at music and leadership. Through more than 4,500 chartered chapters, Tri-M has helped thousands of young people provide years of service through music in schools throughout the world. Tri-M is a program of The National Association for Music Education, the largest non-profit organization dedicated to the advancement of music education. Through its many programs, activities, publications, and conferences, MENC addresses all aspects of music education and works to ensure that every student can be a part of a balanced, comprehensive, and high quality program of music instruction.

The University of Rochester presents this award to a junior who has a strong interest in innovation and/or information technology and a high level of achievement in this area in coursework and outside of school. This award makes him/her eligible for up to approximately $30,000.00 worth of scholarship money over four years at the University of Rochester.

Schenectady Light Opera High School Musical Theatre Awards

Each year Schenectady Light Opera Company grants awards to area high school students who have shown excellence in the performance arts. This year, Mohon Masque has been recognized with two nominations in Outstanding Performance in a high school musical for their production of “West Side Story.”
