arrow bullet EMERGENCY COMMUNITY BUDGET FORUM SET FOR WEDNESDAY, FEB. 12 -- Governor Pataki's state budget proposal will cut $1.2 billion in aid to public schools at a time when costs are rising and academic requirements are at an all-time high. The results of this cut could be disastrous for Mohonasen. The district would lose $671,532 in state aid next year which would force a 4.7% increase in school taxes due to that cut alone. Add to this the rising cost of doing business (i.e., increases in health insurance, retirement contributions, utilities and salaries) and residents would face a 14.2% increase in taxes next year -- simply to maintain current levels of program and staff. To get next year's budget down to a 7.9% tax rate increase, about a million dollars would need to be cut from existing programs and staff -- cuts that would mean loss of staff, increases in class sizes and loss of programs. Given the extremely difficult fiscal circumstances facing Mohonasen this year, staff and community input into budget discussions will be more important than ever. As a result, the district is hosting an Emergency Community Budget Forum on Wednesday, February 12 at 7 p.m. in the High School's Farnsworth Technology Center. ALL RESIDENTS OF THE DISTRICT ARE INVITED TO ATTEND to get the facts and get involved. More information here. (15K PDF) Child care will be available.
