2011-2012 Draper Physical Education

4 Golden rules! (Follow these simple rules every day and you should get a 90 or higher in PE)

1. Change your clothes each day
2. Have your binder and something to write with each day
3. Try your best in every activity
4. Be polite at all times!

GRADING OVERVIEW

60% of the grade for the semester will come from the daily points rubric.
20% of the grade for the semester will come from the unit / semester assessment rubric.
10% of the grade for the semester will come from notebook quizzes.
10% of the grade for the semester will come from a test or a project
100% of the grade for the semester.

DAILY POINTS =60% of the semester grade (60 points)
Each of the 20 classes per semester is worth 3 points (20 classes x 3 points = 60 pts.)
The daily points are based on the student’s performance in the following areas:
1. Class preparation – Arriving on time and with the necessary materials
2. Following classroom rules – Following the rules the first time you are asked
3. Effort – Try your best without having to be reminded by the teacher to increase your
    level of participation
4. Being polite – Being courteous to your teacher and your classmates

UNIT / SEMESTER ASSESSMENT=20% of the semester grade (20 points)
The unit / semester rubric is designed to assess each student’s overall performance in the following areas:
1. Citizenship 2. Following Directions 3. Attitude/Effort 4. Skill

A student can earn between 1-5 points for each of the 4 categories for a total of 20 points:
Ex. 1=Poor 2= Below Average 3= Average 4=above average 5=Excellent

3 ring binder and  QUIZZES=10% of the Semester grade (10 points)
3-ring binder- This 3-ring binder should be a ½ inch binder or less if possible. This binder should be left in your PE locker so that it is available for class each day. A sign in the teacher’s office window will tell you when you need to bring your notebook into class. If no sign is posted then you should leave your binder in your locker for that day. If you do not have your binder and/or something to write with you will have .5 of your 3 daily points deducted from your grade. We recommend that you attach a pencil to your notebook with a string so you will always have one. There will be three or more open notebook quizzes each semester.

TEST or PROJECT=10% of the Semester grade (10 points)
6th & 7th Grade - A 33-50 short answer question test for 6th grade

8th Grade - A computer project Semester 1and a written project Semester 2

OTHER ISSUES

1. CHECK THE WINDOW!
Each day you walk into the locker room you should check the window for the sign with your teachers name on it. Under their name instructions will be listed such as Change, Inside, Outside, Swimming. These instructions tell you what you should prepare for. The only time you should not change is if the sign specifically says DO NOT CHANGE! Just a reminder, any time that sign says “Notebook” you should bring your 3-ring binder and a pen or pencil to write with.

2. Medical Excuses
A medical excuse will be granted whenever a note from a DOCTOR is brought TO THE NURSE. The classes missed will not have to be made up, and the student’s grade will be based on the classes attended.

3. Parent Notes / Nurse’s Excuse
At the nurse’s discretion, a student may be excused from participating in class by a note from a parent. Self-limiting may be written on the excuse. If so, the student will be expected to change and participate in class to the best of his/her abilities under the circumstances. Students may also be excused from class, if they become ill during the school day. Anytime a one day nurse’s excuse is given, THE CLASSES WILL HAVE TO BE MADE UP.  Classes can be made up by attending 2 intramurals and all 3 points will be added to your grade. (1.5 points earned for each session attended).

4. School Related Absences
School related absences such as speech lessons, guidance visits, field trips or music lessons will not have to be made up. The student should bring a pass to their Physical Education teacher that will excuse their absence (Other students should not be relied on to get this information to the teacher).

5. Absence
Three (3) free absences, which include internal and external suspension, with no make-up requirement will be given each semester. The student should get any written work missed during the next class they attend. Any absence over 3 can be made up by attending 2 intramurals (1.5 points earned for each session attended).

6. Unprepared
If a student comes to class without a change of clothes, but is wearing sneakers, they will be allowed to participate in class that day and earn 1.5 of their daily points. If a student has no sneakers they will receive 0 points for the day.  Lost points can be re-earned by completing make-ups.

7. Make Up Classes
1. Participation in intramural activities

2. Written work (from the ET web page)

DUE TO THE NATURE OF THE ACTIVITIES PHYSICAL EDUCATION HAS SOME INHERENT PHYSICAL RISKS. Minor and even potentially serious injury can occur from participation in this or any physical activity. These risks are greatly reduced if you use common sense, are always safety conscious, and always follow the rules of the activities.

I understand the rules and the numerical grading policy that have been listed and reviewed on these pages. I also understand that breaking a rule on any of these pages can result in disciplinary action and or loss of credit for that day’s class.

In accordance with the Success is Required program, I am aware that any student that does not achieve a 65% or higher will receive an Incomplete on their report card for the given semester. The Incomplete will remain, and the student will be placed on Academic Probation, until the required Essential Tasks (ET’s) are completed. Upon completion of the ET’s, the Incomplete will then be replaced with a 65%.
