AND THE WINNER IS....
NEWBERY AWARD
Named after eighteenth-century British bookseller John Newbery. It is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children.
The 2011 Newbery Medal Award winner is Moon over Manifest
by Clare Vanderpool

After a life of riding the rails with her father, 12-year-old Abilene can’t understand why he has sent her away to stay with Pastor Shady Howard in Manifest, Missouri, a town he left years earlier; but over the summer she pieces together his story. In 1936, Manifest is a town worn down by sadness, drought, and the Depression, but it is more welcoming to newcomers than it was in 1918, when it was a conglomeration of coal-mining immigrants who were kept apart by habit, company practice, and prejudice. Abilene quickly finds friends and uncovers a local mystery. Their summerlong “spy hunt” reveals deep-seated secrets and helps restore residents’ faith in the bright future once promised on the town’s sign.
CALDECOTT AWARD
Named after 19th Century English Illustrator Randolph Caldecott, this award is presented annually to a distinguished artist of American picture books for children by the Association for Library Service to Children.

The 2011 Caldecott Medal Award winner is A Sick Day for Amos McGee, illustrated by Erin E. Stead, written by Philip C. Stead.
In this tender tale of reciprocity and friendship, zookeeper Amos McGee gets the sniffles and receives a surprise visit from his caring animal friends. Erin Stead’s delicate woodblock prints and fine pencil work complement Philip Stead’s understated, spare and humorous text to create a well-paced, gentle and satisfying book, perfect for sharing with friends.
Named after a school librarian, this award is presented annually for excellence in young adult literature. It is sponsored by Booklist, a publication of the American Library Association.

It's filled with valuable goods—a "Lucky Strike" that could make them rich, if only they can find asafe way to cash it in. Amid the wreckage, a girl barely clings to life.
