Tips for protecting you and your family
In this day and age families and educators need to take responsibility for their teens' internet use. On this site we have put together some resources to help both parents and teens learn about the potential dangers and ensure safer, more productive online experiences. There are many on line social networking sites. Some of the more popular sites are: Myspace, Facebook, Friendster, Xanga, and Twitter. Below are some excellent "Do's and Don'ts" to follow when using these, and other, sites.
Don't
Communicate with people you don't know
Post your cell phone number, birthday, address or the name of your school
Give out your password to anyone except your parents/guardian
Meet with anyone you only know from the internet
Post plans and activities on your site
Post sexually provocative photos, or any photos not intended for family and friends
Post photos with locations, signs, license plates or school names
Threaten to take away computer/internet privileges until you've discussed internet safety with your child
Do
Check the privacy settings of any networking sites you use.
Set privacy setting to friends only and comments from others by approval
Delete unwanted messages or friends who leave inappropriate comments
Save & print questionable activity including date and time.
Tell your parents or guardian if anything happens online that makes you uncomfortable, confused or feel scared
Establish family rules for using the internet and a "safe zone" for your child to report things without fearing consequences
