Thomas Flood is running for his first term on the Board of Education.
Flood is a high school English teacher at Niskayuna Central School District.
Flood has a master’s degree in secondary education in English from the State University of New York at Albany. He received a bachelor’s degree in English secondary education from SUNY Oswego.
He is currently co-president of the Mohonasen Sports Boosters, and was a member of the committee for developing a proposal for a new football field.
Flood has coached Carman Little League for the past seven years. He also coaches in the Capital District Youth Basketball League, as well as AAU basketball.
He and his wife, Colleen, have two children: Lucas, who is a sophomore at Mohonasen High School; and Samuel, who is a seventh grade student at Draper Middle School.
“In my 27 years as a high school teacher, I have participated in a wide variety of student extracurricular activities, such as community service groups, musical productions, yearbook production, as well as having served on committees to address attendance policies, teacher evaluations, and budget review. I presently serve as the Co-President for the Mohonasen Sports Boosters, and have coached in Carman Little League and the Mohonasen Capital District Youth Basketball league,” said Flood. “These activities, combined with my classroom experience, have allowed me to work with a vast array of administrators, teachers from different levels, school board members, parents and students, and it became very clear that each group has its own distinct perspectives and needs. I developed the ability to listen to these different people, to understand their points of view and to try to incorporate their ideas into the final product of any given organization.”
“As an educator, I have also learned that a successful K-12 experience is the result of a balance between several strong and vital programs including music, the arts, sports and academics. All are equally important in providing the greatest number of opportunities for students’ growth and success,” said Flood. “The most immediate challenge we face as a community is to continue to provide support for these programs during difficult financial times. To this end, I bring a very informed, well-rounded perspective to the position of board member, and I would like the opportunity to support the efforts of all members of the Mohonasen school community.”
