arrow bullet ALL New York State residents who own their own homes can significantly reduce their school property taxes through a School Tax Reduction (STAR) exemption, regardless of age or income. But the savings is not automatic.

You have to apply with your town assessor's office to be eligible for the tax break--and seniors who apply for the enhanced exemption must reapply each year.

For more information about the STAR program, contact the assessor's office in your town:

  • Rotterdam -- 355-7363
  • Colonie -- 783-2701
  • Guilderland -- 356-1980

You can access more on this valuable program, and download the necessary forms online at http://www.orps.state.ny.us.

arrow bullet STAR Property tax rebate check no longer automatic — As part of the New York State Middle Class STAR program, which was approved by the Legislature back in April, Mohonasen homeowners must file an application to get their property tax rebate checks this year.

Please do not get these new rebate checks confused with the STAR that everyone has come to know. There are now two types of STAR school tax reductions:
  • The Basic STAR and Enhanced STAR tax exemption programs will continue as they have in the past. You must apply for the Enhanced STAR program through the town assessor by March 1 each year.
  • The new Middle Class STAR rebate checks will be in addition to the Basic and Enhanced STAR savings. Property owners who receive a Basic STAR exemption with an income of less than $250,000 must apply for the check because it is based on a recipient’s income. The New York State Department of Tax & Finance has begun mailing Middle Class STAR rebate applications to homeowners, which are expected to arrive in September. You must fill out and file the Middle Class STAR application by November 30, 2007. Senior citizens who receive an Enhanced STAR exemption will receive a rebate check automatically without needing to complete an application.

To find out more information about the Middle Class STAR application process, go to http://www.tax.state.ny.us/star/2007 or call the New York State Department of Tax and Finance at 1-877-6-STAR-NY (1-877-678-2769).
