The
Mohonasen community is well known for its support of its
schools. This support is felt in countless ways. It’s
demonstrated when parents check students’ homework and
reinforce the importance of working hard in school. It’s
demonstrated when residents and businesses make generous
donations to support student fundraisers. Community
support takes the form of volunteers who give countless
hours to help in our classrooms, serve on school
committees, chaperone field trips and make quality
extracurricular activities possible for children. When
our student athletes, artists, musicians and actors take
to the field and stage, they know that fans of all ages
will be there to cheer them on and show support.
Mohonasen
also gives back to the wider community by opening its
school doors each year, welcoming parents, students,
senior citizens and all other members of the community
to use its facilities in a number of ways:
-
Mohonasen offers a variety of Continuing Education
courses each fall and spring. Offerings include
everything from speaking Italian and jewelry making
to information about long-term care insurance and
yoga. Residents 62 years and older can register for
any course at half of the resident rate.
-
During the summer months, children of all age levels
are invited and encouraged to take advantage of the
district’s summer enrichment classes and summer
sports camps, as well as serving as a host site for
camps run by the Town of Rotterdam.
-
Mohonasen’s pool is in full swing all year long, and
offers classes and open swim sessions to all age and
ability levels. Reduced swimming rates are offered
for students and senior citizens.
-
Mohonasen’s gymnasiums, auditorium and playing
fields are routinely used for AAU basketball games,
dance recitals, Little League practices, etc.
-
Community members are invited each year to attend
school plays put on by the renowned Mohon Masque
Theater groups. Senior citizens with Gold Cards are
treated to a free show at the annual dress
rehearsal. (Mohonasen Gold Cards can be obtained at
the district office, at no cost.)
-
All music competitions, sporting events and
educational
activities such as the Odyssey of the Mind
competitions, the Academic Family Fun Fair and the
Strawberry Festival are open to anyone who would
like to attend. Senior citizens who present their
Gold Card at league athletic events also get in for
free.
-
Each spring, the district hosts a Senior Citizens
Prom for Rotterdam seniors. Mohonasen students serve
up a delicious dinner, followed by music and
dancing.
-
All four schools host charitable events every year
that directly benefit the poor, the sick and the
elderly.
-
Mohonasen is a site for general elections.
