Friendship in First Grade
Many children at the elementary level have a hard time with one very important subject, making and keeping friends. For this reason a friendship unit was developed for first grade. This unit will be based on the program Jellybean Jamboree. Students will be introduced to a jellybean named, Friendly Francine, the neighborly pink jellybean. With Friendly Francine's help children will realize what it takes to be a good friend. The friendship unit is designed for students to gain a better understanding of themselves and others by continuing to teach students. The topics discussed during the Friendship Unit are:
What it takes to be a good friend
Sharing is a important characteristic of a good friend
In order to have friends, we must act nicely
Helping children understand what it feels like to be left out and learn that friends do not exclude one another
Friends listen to each other
Emphasizing to children that what is important is how a person acts, not how he/she looks
The friendship unit will start in February and I will be pushing into your child's classroom. The unit will run for 5 weeks. If you have any questions or concerns or would like additional resources to help your child at home please feel free to contact me.
