Leveled Reading Lists
We level books to help us
match books to readers at the level at which a child can read and
understand independently, or “on their own.” We level books using
the Fountas & Pinnell system. The Fountas & Pinnell system assigns
each level a letter, “A” through “V,” from easiest to most
challenging text.
Many bookstores, libraries, and book catalogs are beginning to
provide Fountas & Pinnell reading levels for their books. One of the
Internet sites we have found to be most helpful is the
Beaverton School District Leveled Book Database. Once on their
site, you can search by subject, author, title, and/or guided
reading level.
We have also begun to put together lists of leveled books you should
be able to find in a library or a book store, to get you started.
Attached, please find copies of those lists. We encourage your child
to read, read, read every day. We’d like them to read to you, to the
neighbor, to the crickets, to themselves, 15-20 minutes a day!
Practice makes us better readers. Thank you for your assistance!
