Teach your preschooler the ABCs
Studies show that knowledge of the alphabet is the single best predictor of reading success in the early grades. In fact, kids are already behind if they cannot identify most letters of the alphabet by the time they enter kindergarten. Parents can get their preschoolers ready for kindergarten by teaching letter recognition in fun ways:
Make two sets of letter cards -- one with capital letters and one with lower case letters. Play as a matching game.
Trace letters in the sand or on your child's back and have him or her try to name the letter you made.
Read lots of alphabet book together. Point to the letters on the pages out of order and see if your child can identify them. Better yet make your own alphabet books!
Identify letters in street signs and names of familiar restaurants when you are riding in the car.
Using Alpha-Bits cereal, have your child spoon out various letters, starting with the letters in his or her first name.
