Food
service department checked supplies after beef recall —
On
February 6,
Mohonasen was notified by the state Office of General Services that the USDA had put a hold on the use of Westland beef.
The NYS bid beef patty distributed by Advance Food Company, and
also used by our food service department, was affected by this hold.
Our food service department is not going to serve any
ground beef products until all ground beef products are
examined and checked. In addition, the taco meat that we serve is
turkey taco meat, which is not a product in
question.

Requesting parent permission for second entrees at
elementary schools —
The Food Service Department has noticed that many
elementary students are purchasing second entrees in
addition to their full lunch. Some examples of the
second entrees being purchased are nachos supreme,
chicken patty on a bun and pizza. After observing the
students, much of the additional food purchased is being
thrown out. Because of our concern that parents may not
want to pay the additional cost, and the concern of
childhood obesity, we are requiring a note from parents
giving permission for their child to purchase a second
entree.

Ability
to pay online for meals is delayed —
In the Food Service Program newsletter, mailed out to
households at the beginning of August, we advertised the
possibility of parents being able to prepay for meals
online at the beginning of the school year. Unfortunately,
we do not anticipate this form of payment to be up and
running now until the end of October. We are sorry for the
inconvenience, please check back for more
details.

Lunch
prices stay the same at Mohonasen (August 2006) —
The cost of school lunches at Mohonasen will stay the same
as last year's. The Board of Education
approved a 25 cent increase last year for lunch entrees.
Lunches will continue to cost $1.50 at Bradt and Pinewood Schools
and $1.75 at Draper Middle School and the high school.
Discounts will be available for those who prepay.
Food Services Director Kim
Gagnon said the increase was necessary to cover the
skyrocketing costs of food and beverages. Mohonasen's
lunch prices are more in line with neighboring school
districts. Schalmont's lunches prices are the same as
Mohonasen's. Guilderland's prices are slightly higher at
$1.60 for elementary and $1.80 at the secondary
level.
With a focus on providing children
with healthy meals that include whole grains, fresh
fruits, and vegetables, the
district is always looking into ways to improve the menu
says Gagnon.

Food
for thought —
An
estimated 25 percent of our nation's children are now
considered overweight -- compared to just 4 percent in
the 1960s. Parents may be surprised to know that a great
deal of effort goes into developing nutritionally-sound
lunches that will fuel learning throughout the day. Read
