Mission

Mohonasen has PLANS for its students! Our mission is to ensure that students reach their Potential to Learn in an Academically rich, Nurturing and Safe environment.

Vision

Mohonasen Central School District will be widely recognized as an exemplary school district, enthusiastically educating mind, body, and character. Families, visitors, and community members will experience an environment of respect and care surrounding each personal interaction. They will discover a culture of excellence permeating every program. Mohonasen will be a model of a safe, effective, and well-rounded educational community in a diverse suburban setting.

We believe that in order to attain our mission and vision, we, as adults, have the responsibility to do "Whatever It Takes" in order to ensure the success of every child.

GOAL 1: Improve communications throughout the school community
In order to provide a quality educational experience, it is critical to establish a culture and structures that ensure accurate, appropriate, and effective communication. Areas of focus under this goal will be:
  • Providing a positive "customer service" attitude and experience
  • Enhancing parent-teacher relationships
  • Ensuring that at any time the community comes in contact with our "business" they will have a positive experience that inspires confidence in our school

Draper Middle School
  • Provide three parent workshops to address adolescent topics: "Youngsters and the Internet (Nov. 15), "Anti-bullying Strategies for Students" Jan. 31), and "Emerging Adolescent Issues" (Mar. 27)

GOAL 2: 100% of students will meet or exceed AYP by 2013. In order to attain this target, each building will annually set concrete attainable benchmarks to facilitate movement towards the goal.
Bradt Primary School
  • June K Level B
  • June 1 Level H
  • June 2 Level L (Based on 2008 Fontas & Pinnell Benchark Assessments)
  • The Three Minute Classroom Walk-Through process will be implemented, with EVERY teacher visited a minimum of once every two weeks.
  • Pre-referral identification/prevention/intervention strategies will be compiled and expanded upon. The Child Study Team will be the vehicle for training  and encouraging consistent implementation.
  • The 0.4 elementary guidance position will be developed and articulated.
  • A committee will be established to research/review/recommend standardized K-2 testing protocols which will better enable us to:
    • Align with higher standards
    • Determine each student's progress toward attainment of Standards
    • Identify students for summer AIS
    • Identify candidates for EDK (and start program earlier)
    • Plan to address the unique needs of each incoming class
Pinewood Elementary School
  • Individual student data will be reviewed and shared with classroom teachers and parents on an on-going basis.
  • The Pinewood Student Success Team will support students, teachers, and parents to customize educational experiences.
  • At-risk initiatives including the revised AIS structure, new Collaborative Teams, after-school safety nets, social groups, and behavioral counseling will be available.
  • Teachers will receive on-going professional development in the areas of balanced literacy.
  • On-going collaboration between Academic Administrators and Principal.
Draper Middle School
  • ELA: An increase of 10 percent annually in Levels 3 and 4 on the NYS ELA tests for grades 6-8.
    • Academic Intervention Services: Advisory support (10-12 students), skills classes (5-6) students, collaborative ELA teaching, literacy centers (pilot: Grade 6), small group workshops targeting reading comprehension, listening, writing (2 hour sessions).
    • Open House informational sessions for parents, as related to the NYS assessments.
    • All-call home for parental support for NYS exams.
    • On-going ELA workshop for teachers focusing on guided reading strategies, vocabulary, writing enhancements.
    • Increased administrative support for collaborative teaching models and interdisciplinary units.
    • ELA curriculum mapping.
    • Additional ELA class for grade 6 students/same teacher.
    • Flexible scheduling for increased time for ELA, as needed in grade 6/three-teachers teams.
    • Differentiated instruction.
    • Academic probation support through extended school day, 1 x week.
    • Mentoring/tutoring programs for at-risk students (high school, college outreach, etc.).
Mohonasen High School
  • Closely monitor cohort data through use of new fields in updated version of SASI. Set goals of 905 4-year cohort graduate rate for September 2007 cohort (the year's freshman class).
  • Creation of 9th Grade Transition Team to target those students most at risk of dropping out of cohort and ultimately out of school.
  • Work with new social studies academic administrator to address poor performance on NYS Global History Regents exam. This should be addressed in large part by the formation of the transition team, but can also be improved by such things as structured reviews and changes to instructional methods in the 80-minute block.
  • Examine the structure of PST, making adjustments to help team be responsible to the needs of most at-risk students. Ideas include the administration of various screening devices and the inclusion of students in the discussions at the team levels.

  • School Environment Planning Team (Archways) will continue to look at ways to improve the physical atmosphere on the school grounds. Examples include work on lobbies, courtyards, and main entrance area.
  • Charge of the School, Environment Planning Team (Archways) will be broadened to encompass school events, such as games, dances, pep rally, number of fun and safe events for students during evenings and weekends.
  • School Management Planning Team (Hallways) will continue to review all day-to-day policies and will continually monitor building safety procedures, policy on electronics, dress code, and enforcement of the Code of Conduct.

GOAL 4: Fiscal/Resource Stewardship
Pinewood Elementary School
  • To continue to assess programmatic needs to support student achievement.
Draper Middle School
  • To continue to support the curriculum with technology with hardware, as well as software.
  • To make use of differentiated instruction via the new multi-purpose room (i.e., television equipment, projection screen, sound system, etc.).
  • Special education: to provide the space to deliver program and services for students with high needs.
  • Alternate education: to provide alternative to suspensions for students at risk, including mandated counseling, an after-school program that supports the "Success is Required" initiative.
  • To update/upgrade the facility in terms of energy-saving ideas, safety, etc.
Mohonasen High School
  • Develop a responsible budget that balances limited resources with the needs of the myriad of programs here at the high school.
  • Investigate alternate sources of funding to continue initiatives of School Environment Planning team (Archways).
  • Work with IT department to further develop TV production capabilities within the building. The building would benefit from a number of workstations dedicated to video editing, as well as a functional live studio.

GOAL 5: Development of a District-Wide, Long Range Educational Plan
Bradt Primary School
  • Early childhood social, emotional, physical, and academic needs will be represented during the study process and development of the long-range plan.
Pinewood Elementary School
  • Collaborate with district educational planner to address the needs of elementary students.
Draper Middle School
  • Continuation of small teams for grade six, as transition from grade 5.
  • Ample space for delivery of services for special education.
  • Classroom space for collaborative teaching/learning centers/activities.
  • Continuation of improvement of technology to enhance programs.
  • Upgrades to the science classrooms to link with outside schools, colleges, agencies, etc.
Mohonasen High School
  • Work with Technology Department to plan for future expansion of programs and laboratory space in a concentrated effort to stay current with the increasing needs for strong programming in this area.
  • Work with the Fine Arts Department in planning for/and construction of anticipated Fine Arts wing.
  • Work with Physical Education Department and Athletic Director to study and improve athletic facilities.
